• He doesn't cry, stands there, brave, strong will
• Poverty is described, once again invoking sympathy. (Notice that everything in this story has to do with sympathetic feelings.)
• He can't get money yet his thoughtful sister helps him get it by playing waits
• Here we see the strong bonding of sister-brother relationship
• Applauded for his trust and courage
• In school, he stands up against Mr. Chase
• And helps the other eight students to pay up,
• We feel for him a sense of achievement.
• AS students too the feeling is stronger
• As there are teachers who are like that too.

• Rather painstaking but she still dares to challenge the odds
• She knows how to act at the right time (The doll talked to only at night)
• Brave
• Vulnerable
• Daring (She accepted the dare)
• Bullied, invoking sense of apathy for her by reader
• She gets mistaken, victory being noticed and found
• Applauded for courage
• Composed and act-in-the-correct-time

Similarities

I like both due to courage, handling of the situation, able to accept pressure and there is a small victory at the end celebrating the protagonist.
